BMW M57 Torque Specifications

Fastener tightening torques for the BMW M57 diesel engine, grouped by assembly — including torque-angle stages, multi-step sequences and single-use (stretch) bolt callouts for the cylinder head, bearings, flywheel and more.

Cylinder Head

Cylinder head bolts: 80 Nm (sequence: 80 Nm -> loosen 1/2 turn (180 degrees) -> 50 Nm -> +90 degrees -> +90 degrees) — Same across M57/M57TU/TU2. Replace, wash & oil bolts. Stretch bolts.

Block & Bottom End

Main bearing bolts: 20 Nm (+70) — Angle conflict: W1 E39 §11 11 = +70°; W2 = +50° (both agree 20 Nm seat). Lean +70° (primary TIS page); verify for chassis. Replace, wash, oil. Stretch bolts.
Connecting rod bolts: 20 Nm (sequence: 5 Nm (seat) -> 20 Nm (joint) -> +70 degrees) — Same across variants. Replace, wash, oil. Stretch bolts.

Cylinder Head

Camshaft sprocket bolts: 20 Nm (+35 (M57) / +50 (M57TU)) — Thread corrected to M12x1.5 (was mis-listed M7). 20 Nm + 35° confirmed both sources for M57; TU uses +50°. Replace screws.
Camshaft bearing cap bolts: M6 = 10; M7 = 14; M7 (8.8) = 15; M8 = 20 Nm — Torque varies by bolt size. Single-use not stated.
Chain tensioner cap nut: 40 Nm
Chain tensioner bolt: 20 Nm — Old doc listed a plunger cylinder M26x1.5 = 50 Nm — could not re-confirm; see gaps.
Timing cover bolts: M6 = 10; M7 = 15; M8 = 22; M10 = 47 Nm

Block & Bottom End

Vibration damper bolts: 45 Nm (none (S1) / +60 (later TIS)) — 45 Nm = original launch (S1 09/98, genuine BMW). 40 Nm + 60° = revised TIS, use for TU/facelift builds. W2's extra second +60° pass is single-source, treat as unverified. Same fastener, revised spec. Replace screws.
Crankshaft pulley nut: 190 Nm — Decoupled belt pulley (vibration-damper body) outer nut. Not angle-tightened. Replace nut. There is no separate 190 Nm 'crank hub bolt'.
Flywheel bolts: 105 (M57) / 120 (M57TU) Nm — Variant-dependent. TIS groups M57/M47/M47TU = 105 Nm; M57TU = 120 Nm. Do NOT apply flat 120 Nm to original M57. Replace bolts.
Driveplate bolts: 121 Nm — W1 = 121 Nm; W2 = 120 Nm. Same M57 / M57TU. Replace bolts.

Fuel & Injection

Injector clamp bolts: 9 Nm — M47TU/M57/M57TU CR. Replace washer. Do NOT use the 10 Nm 'nozzle combination' row (pre-CR mechanical nozzle).
HP pipe: rail to injector: 20 grey/phosphate (from 10/2000); 30 yellow/chrome (before 09/2002); 23 yellow/chrome (from 09/2002) Nm — Date/finish-dependent — most error-prone value. Identify pipe colour + production date before torquing. Replace pipe.
HP pipe: pump to rail: 35 (before 10/2000); 23 (from 09/2002) Nm — Single-source (bmwman.ru). Replace pipe.
HP pump sprocket nut: 65 Nm — Sprocket to HP pump (CR). 2-source consistent.
Rail pressure sensor: 38 Nm — Single readable source (bmwman.ru); workshop-manuals confirms procedure. Do NOT release screw ring.
Fuel metering valve (pump): 9 Nm — Pump-mounted DRV. Replace O-ring.
Rail pressure regulator: 80 Nm — Distinct from the 9 Nm pump valve. Single-source. Replace seal.
Glow plugs: 18 Nm — No M57 vs M57TU difference (2-source). Replace seal. Ignore 20/25 Nm (petrol plug) rows.
Glow plug connector: 4 Nm — The 4 Nm 'connecting pin' is a different non-M57 part — do NOT apply to the glow-plug bus-bar. Flagged in gaps.
Fuel return banjo bolt: 25 Nm — Closest documented LP banjo. Replace washers.
Fuel tank drain plug: 25 Nm
Low-pressure fuel hose clamps: 2.0 (10-16 mm) / 3.0 (18-33 mm) / 4.0 (37-43 mm) Nm

Turbo & Exhaust

Turbo to manifold nuts: 50 Nm — Shared turbo table across M57/M57TU/M57T2. Treat self-lock nuts as replace. >=2-source.
Exhaust manifold nuts: 20 Nm — Copper paste; tighten inside->outside. Replace nuts. bmwman lists M7/Molykote (torque agrees).
Manifold stay bolts: 23 Nm — Studs into head. Bolt cement.
Turbo oil feed bolt: 25 Nm — To turbo & block/head; replace washers. >=2-source.
Turbo oil supply bolt (block): 40 Nm — Distinct from 25 Nm turbo-end banjo. Replace washers.
Turbo oil return flange: 22 Nm — All-chassis. Replace gasket.
Turbo oil return plug: 45 Nm
Downpipe to turbo: 42 Nm — Single-source, pending 2nd confirmation. Replace nuts/gasket.
Exhaust joint (cat-back): 55 Nm — Bolted flange; single-source, pending 2nd confirmation.

Intake & Air

Boost hose clamps: 6 Nm — All-chassis + bmwman.

Turbo & Exhaust

Wastegate control line: 30 Nm
Wastegate valve bolts: 25 (M8); 10 (M6 screws) Nm — Single-turbo.
Turbine housing nut: 220 Nm
Exhaust gas (O2) sensor: 50 Nm — Anti-seize.

Intake & Air

EGR valve bolts: 8 Nm — Single-source (bimmerguides).
EGR pipe flange bolts: 15 Nm — Single-source.

Oil System

Oil sump bolts: M6 (8.8) = 10; M6 (10.9) = 12; M8 (8.8) = 22 Nm
Sump section bolts: 10 Nm
Oil drain plug: M12x1.5 = 25; M18x1.5 = 35; M22x1.5 = 60 Nm — M18 conflict: workshop-manuals (E46+E53) = 35, bmwman = 30 -> 35 better-supported. M22 = alloy-sump plug. Renew sealing ring.
Oil filter housing bolts: 22 Nm
Oil filter housing union: 40 Nm
Oil filter cap: 25 Nm — Replace O-ring.
Oil filter cover: 22 / 33 / 33 Nm
Oil cooler banjo bolt: 37 Nm — Single-source. Replace washers.
Oil cooler union nut: 20 Nm — Single-source.
Oil pressure sensor: 14 Nm — Single-source.

Cylinder Head

Vacuum pump bolts: 22 (M8/M9 microcapsule); 10 (M6) Nm — Replace (microcapsule). M6 variant = 10 Nm; M9 microcapsule = 22 Nm.

Cooling

Coolant drain plug: 25 Nm — Single-source.
Thermostat housing bolts: 10 Nm
Water pump bolts: 10 / 15 / 22 Nm
Coolant temperature sensor: 13 Nm — Replace seal.
Coolant bleed screw: 8 Nm

Block & Bottom End

Crankshaft sensor bolt: 10 Nm

Cylinder Head

Camshaft sensor bolt: 4.5 Nm — NOT the cam sensor-gear.
Camshaft signal wheel: 30 Nm — Distinct from the 4.5 Nm sensor bolt.
Rocker cover bolts: M6 = 10 ; M7 = 15 — Cylinder-head / rocker cover screws.

Intake & Air

Intake manifold bolts: M6 = 10 ; M7 = 15 ; M8 = 22 — Intake-specific sources also cite M6×42 bolt = 8 Nm, M7 hex nut = 13 Nm.
Intake manifold bracket: 23 — No fastener-specific TIS value — BMW mandates its GS 90003-2 general standard for this thread/grade (M8 8.8, yellow ZN). Verify actual bolt grade.
